The death of Timothy Patrick Joseph McCarthy of Miramichi occurred at the Miramichi Regional Hospital Tuesday March 24.
He was in his 86th year.
Born in Clonakilty Ireland, he was the son of Patrick and Margaret McCarthy. He emigrated to Canada in 1955, living first in British Columbia, where he met his wife Joan Kingston, a native of the Miramichi, who was teaching in Williams Lake, B.C.
Originally a plumber, he worked at that trade in B.C., and after moving to the Miramichi in 1959, was employed as a pipefitter, and then an electrician, at Heath Steele Mines. Beginning in 1967, he worked as an electrician at the Fraser paper mill (later RePap) in Newcastle and was employed there until his retirement in 1995.
Tim became active in the labour movement after his arrival on the Miramichi, eventually becoming president of the New Brunswick Federation of Labour and vice-president of the Canadian Labour Congress and was the only member of the CLC executive working at his journeyman trade.
He was also a three-term councillor for the town of Newcastle, a long-time executive member of Father Dixon Council Knights of Columbus and a volunteer for the Kidney Foundation and Alzheimer Society of Canada.
He is survived by his son Brendan of St. John’s, N.L. his three daughters, Siobhan Humphrey of Edmonton, Moira McCarthy of Guelph Ont., and Suzanne McCarthy of Ottawa, daughter-in-law Audrey and sons-in-law John Humphrey, Moe Vidotto and Simon Kennedy; his sister Kitty O’Mahoney of Clonakilty, Ireland; nine grandchildren, Andrew, Richard, Rebecca, Fiona, Clara, Katherine, Jack, Timothy and Leo; great grandchildren Alexander and Ryan; a large number of nieces and nephews, including Gerard O’Mahoney of Galway Ireland; and a wide circle of family and friends.
