The death of Donald “Don” Albert Hamel husband of the late Eleanor (Layton) Hamel of Walls Special Care Home, Blackville, NB and formerly of Newcastle, NB occurred at the Miramichi Regional Hospital on Thursday, October 15, 2015 at the age of 79. Born in Claire SK, Don was the son of the late Ralph and Evelyn (Sorrell) Hamel. Don retired from being a Real Estate agent and running El-Don Ceramics Studio. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Newcastle Rotary Club and St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church where he was a Eucharistic Minister and reader for many years. Don also was involved municipal and provincial politics. He loved nature and animals and was a real people person with a great sense of humor.Don is survived by two daughters: Katherine Rowan (Patrick) of Oakville, ON, Colleen Murphy (Steven) of Miramichi, NB; one son: Tim Hamel (Lesley Elaschuck) of Toronto, ON; three sisters: Sheiagh Deschmer and Lucey Knorr both of Saskatchewan, Moria Treleaven of Calgary, Ab; four brothers: Dave (Flo) and Alvin (Susan) all of Ottawa, ON, Ron (Diane) of Calgary, AB and Royal (Linda) of Guelph ON; seven grandchildren: Ethan, Dylan, Julia, Emily, Brady, Justin and Cory and several nieces and nephews.Besides his wife Eleanor, Don is predeceased by one brother: Roger.At the request of the family there will be no vitiation. A public Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church with Father Tom Fowler officiating at a day and time to be announced at a later date.In Don’s memory a donation may be made to the donor’s choice.Funeral arrangements are under the care of Bell’s Funeral Home, 651 King George Highway, Miramichi, NB Telephone 622-3600.
